Skunks can become a real nuisance once they make their home under your shed or yard. They can also cause problems because they will try to spray and threaten your pets. They also dig up your yard and give off a foul odor. If you suspect skunks to be living on your property, then you need to use a few useful tips to help you keep them out of your yard. Here is a look at how you can achieve your goals.
Remove all food sources
The first thing you need to do is ensure there is no food available. Any food source that lies within the reach of a skunk becomes a reason for it to invade your property. So, the best way to keep it out of your yard is by removing all food sources. If you have garbage cans in the open, then make sure these are properly secured with a lid. Also, make sure there is no food lying about under the porch or shed and also make sure there is nothing edible available near the patio and any crawl spaces.
Shine a bright light at night
Second, you need to understand that skunks operate by night. Thus, if you want to keep them away from your yard, you need to use a light at night. When conditions are bright and day-like, skunks will go elsewhere. A bright light at night will prove to be an effective weapon with which to keep skunks away from your yard.
Use a homemade repellent
Third, you may want to use a hot pepper recipe to keep skunks away from your yard. Use a single yellow onion and chop it up and add some chopped jalapenos and some Cheyenne pepper and mix this with two quarts of water for a minimum of twenty minutes. This will create an excellent skunk repellent that you can spray on anything that skunks like to feed on. This recipe is very effective and will work for between three and five days.
Use automated sprinklers
Fourth, you can think about shooing away skunks from your property by using automated sprinklers. These sprinklers are equipped with motion sensors that activate the sprinkler as soon as they detect movement. The sprinkler is capable of squirting the skunk from a few feet away and will act as a good way to get rid of skunks.
Fence off your property
Finally, you may want to consider fencing off your property to keep skunks out. Skunks are not good at climbing and so if you erect a barrier, it won't be able to get in because neither will it jump or climb up the barrier. Just make sure the barrier is about three feet high and it should be buried about a foot into the earth. Skunks are not good at digging which means you do not have to dig the barrier too deep into the ground.
